Chicago’s Lakefront Trail is a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike, offering stunning views of Lake Michigan and providing space for running, walking, cycling, and other outdoor activities. One essential feature that keeps the trail accessible and enjoyable, especially during hot summer months, are the Lakefront Hydration Stations. These vital support hubs ensure athletes, walkers, and tourists stay hydrated and safe. However, keeping them running requires ongoing community support.

What Are Lakefront Hydration Stations?

Launched in 2021, the Lakefront Hydration Stations are strategically placed at eight key locations along the Lakefront Trail, from Promontory Point on the South Side to Montrose Beach on the North Side. These stations provide free water and Gatorade for all trail users, along with shade and assistance from dedicated volunteers who help ensure trail users stay hydrated and safe. The mission is simple: to offer a free, accessible resource for all who need it.

Why Your Support Matters

Since their inception, the Hydration Stations have incurred over $100,000 in expenses. With an average of 30,000 people using the Lakefront Trail each summer weekend—and over 1 million gallons of fluids served in 2024 alone—maintaining, stocking, and staffing these stations requires continuous funding.

How You Can Help

CARA relies on community contributions to keep this essential service free and accessible. A portion of proceeds from events like the Lakefront 10 Miler & 5K presented by Fleet Feet helps support this initiative, but additional donations are critical to sustaining it.

By participating in CARA events or making a direct donation, you help ensure that thousands of runners, walkers, and cyclists continue to benefit from this vital resource.
