Tragic Loss of Marathon World-Record Holder – Kelvin Kiptum

CHICAGO - The devastating news on the passing of world record marathon runner Kelvin Kiptum, is a huge tragedy and loss for our sport.  Such a sudden end to a promising career and to unforeseen talents for a young 24 year old.  We send our condolences to his family and dear friends for a remarkable individual.  We console runners of our CARA community in honoring a wonderful person and athlete to be remembered.  Kiptum just recently graced us with a record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, to cement our hometown, as one of the greatest courses in history.  2:00:35 will be remembered on the day of February 11th, 2024 as the mark of an extraordinary effort by a man with undisputed raw talent, that was destined for more.


Kelvin Kiptum Cheruiyot was a Kenyan long-distance runner and the marathon world record holder at the time of his death. He was the only person in history to run the marathon under two hours and one minute in a record-eligible race.  He ran three of the seven fastest marathons in history.
